The challenge
Ploughing is the most energy-hungry operation a tractor performs: draught force dictates the fuel burned per hectare and the size of tractor a farm has to own. The industry has known for decades that vibrating the plough body cuts draught dramatically — but powered vibration systems consume more energy driving the oscillation than they save at the drawbar, which is why they never reached the market. Meanwhile, most European arable land is still ploughed conventionally, and mechanical weed control keeps the plough relevant even as tillage practices evolve.
A passive suspension for the ploughshare that reduces draught force — keeping what it saves, with no powered vibration and no extra energy input.
The technology
A mechanical suspension unit developed at Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME) that mounts the ploughshare so it tills the soil more efficiently — entirely passively:
- Lower draught force — less draught force required for the same working depth, so less fuel per hectare, or a wider plough behind the same tractor.
- Fully passive — no drive, no power take-off load, no electronics; the design avoids the energy penalty that killed powered vibrating ploughs.
- Drop-in at the plough leg — occupies the same structural slot as a conventional plough-leg assembly, designed for integration into the manufacturer's frame.
- Robust, all-steel construction — no wear-prone actuators; built for field conditions.
Where it applies
Mouldboard ploughs for conventional and organic arable farming, integrated at the design stage by plough and tillage-equipment manufacturers (an OEM component, not an aftermarket bolt-on). The benefit compounds wherever fuel cost or tractor capacity is the binding constraint — large conventional-tillage operations and organic farms relying on mechanical weed control alike.
The intellectual property
- Patent pending — an international patent application has been filed, owned 100% by BME.
- Working prototype built and exercised in a relevant environment; field pilots to quantify the draught and fuel savings are the agreed next step.
- The full technical specification is available to qualified parties on request.
Note — early stage: the fuel-saving figure is deliberately unquoted until field pilots have measured it.
Licensing
BME is seeking an OEM licensing partner in tillage equipment, and field-pilot partners to validate the savings on working farms. Options include exclusive and field-of-use licences and co-development toward frame integration. Technical detail is shared under NDA with qualified parties on request.
